Team Macho playfully juxtaposes styles and motifs, ranging from the crudely rendered to the classically painted, creating mixed-media works that encompass a broad range of materials and methods. The collective’s work conveys a strong DIY ethic and a decidedly informal, multidisciplinary approach. With an idiosyncratic attitude toward collaboration, the group synchronously cultivates a cooperative yet highly competitive spirit, and the very nature of their alliance revolves around celebrating, thwarting, and subverting each other’s contributions, creating seamless collaborations from the fraternal narrative that surrounds their studio practice.
Team Macho is composed of members Nicholas Aoki, Stephen Appleby-Barr, Christopher Buchan, and Lauchie Reid. They share a large studio in Toronto, where their collective efforts are focused on developing an art-making practice that spans the worlds of fine art and illustration. Recent exhibitions include solo shows with Narwhal Projects (Toronto) and the Optica Centre for the Arts (Montreal), as well as international exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, and Amsterdam. Their work has been featured in multiple art fairs, including, most recently, the Material Art Fair in Mexico City and Papier Contemporary Art Fair in Montreal. Team Macho has collaborated with multiple organizations and institutions, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the CBC, Magic Pony, the Drake Hotel, and Open Studio.
