Avec de l’encre et des crayons de couleur appliqués sur du papier réfléchissant teint à la main, Daniel Barrow crée par collage un bouquet de miroirs. Chacun de ces miroirs a été conçu pour sa performance « animée à la main », intitulée Le voleur des miroirs et présentée pour la première fois en février 2014, au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. Barrow est connu par ailleurs pour ses adaptations narratives de bandes dessinées, qu’il réalise en projetant, en superposant et en manipulant ses dessins par rétroprojecteur.
Notice biographique
Daniel Barrow was born in Winnipeg, and he lives and works in Montréal. He uses obsolete technologies to present written, pictorial, and cinematic narratives centring on the practices of drawing and collecting. Since 1993, he has created and adapted comic-book narratives to “manual” forms of animation by projecting, layering, and manipulating drawings on overhead projectors. Barrow has exhibited widely in Canada and abroad. He has performed at the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), PS1 Contemporary Art Center (New York), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, and the British Film Institute (London). His drawings are in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Barrow is the winner of the 2010 Sobey Art Award and the recipient of the 2013 Glenfiddich Artist in Residence Prize.
