Cette œuvre fait partie de The Silver Collection, une série de sculptures imitant l’argenterie chinoise d’exportation. Mes objets « d’argent » sont faits d’aluminium ou d’acier inoxydable. Pour réaliser celui-ci, j’ai découpé une assiette à pizza en aluminium en m’inspirant d’une assiette en argent ajouré du début du 20e siècle, mais en l’adaptant aux consommateurs d’aujourd’hui.
Notice biographique
Karen Tam is a Montreal artist whose research focuses on the construction and imagination of cultures through installations in which she recreates the spaces of Chinese restaurants, karaoke lounges, opium dens, curio shops, and other sites of cultural encounters. She has exhibited her work and participated in residencies across Canada, the United States, Europe, and China. Most recently, she was a finalist for the Prix en art actuel du MNBAQ and was on the long list for the 2016 Sobey Art Award. Tam holds a PhD in cultural studies from Goldsmiths (University of London) and a MFA in sculpture from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work is in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Hydro-Québec, as well as in the RBC Collection, and the Canada Council for the Arts Art Bank, and in private collections in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
