“In this series, Bélanger pursues his venture to turn to good account the results of accidents by capturing imperceptible moments in which chance meets fragmented material. For the project, he silkscreens colour motifs on glass, images which he then fragments and disperses in space or on the ground, thus creating veritable photographic tableaus where surface and depth merge.”
Madeleine Forcier
Biographical note
Born in Rimouski in 1975, Gwenaël Bélanger lives and works in Montreal. Like a “handyman” playing with the limits of perception between the real and unreal, Bélanger uses graphic and photographic processes to question the status of the image — its production, transmission, and reception — challenging our vision and perception. Solo exhibitions of his work have been presented at the Musée régional de Rimouski; centre Expression in Saint-Hyacinthe, and at Galerie de l’UQAM, Optica, Skol, and Galerie Graff in Montreal. He has also participated in several group exhibitions, notably The Hidden Land at the Nettie Horn Gallery in London (2009) and Still Revolution, shown at Toronto’s Contact Photography Festival (2009) and the Québec Triennial at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (2008). He was awarded the Prix Pierre-Ayot in 2009.
