This image was created during an artist residency at the Skaftfell Centre for Visual Art in Seyðisfjörður, Iceland, where Jessica Auer wandered on foot every day for the month of January within the limits of the winter light. The photograph was taken moments after the town’s neon sign was illuminated, signalling the end of the brief daylight hours.
Biographical note
Jessica Auer (b. 1978) lives in Montréal, Canada, where she received her MFA from Concordia University in 2007. Her work is broadly concerned with the study of cultural sites, focusing on themes that connect history, place, journey, and cultural experience. She has participated in several international residency programs, including the Leighton Artist’s Colony at The Banff Centre in Alberta, the Brucebo travel residency based in Gotland, Sweden; The Chilkoot Trail AIR in Alaska/Yukon, and the Skaftfell Centre for Visual Art in Seydisfjördur, Iceland. Recent exhibitions include Oslo8, Basel, Switzerland 2015; The Gotland Museum of Art, Visby, Sweden 2015; VU Photo, Quebec City, 2014; The Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal 2013; Patrick Mikhail Gallery, Ottawa 2013; and Newspace Centre for Photography, Portland, Oregon 2011. Collections include The Canada Council Art Bank and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, among others. She currently teaches photography at Concordia University in Montreal.
