Tailling

The taille was a tax on land. Tailings are industrial waste, like yesterday’s photographic chemicals. To tail is to pursue but also to fall behind, temporally and spatially. Tails are to heads as tops are to bottoms. I bathed a square of paper in a solution of ink and water, inverted it to dry, and still a horizon persists, again and again. Lately, looking into the distance or close-up, whether at the real or the virtual, I sense the limitations of my own vision. Tailling is a misspelling.
Biographical note
Chris Kline lives and works in Montreal. He attended Queen’s University and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. His work recently appeared in Le Projet Peinture at Galerie de l’UQAM, The Question of Abstraction at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, and in exhibitions at Galerie Rene Blouin (Montreal) and Diaz Contemporary (Toronto). It is featured in various private, corporate, and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Caisse Desjardins, Bank of Montreal, and Hydro-Québec.
