In 1980, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts mounted a major exhibition of Irene F. Whittome’s work. For this occasion, Whittome literally emptied her studio of her works. Taking advantage of this marvellous blank slate, she spent the following two years working around the motif of the cross, which she constantly constructed and deconstructed. She created a hybrid object midway between in situ work, installation, and performance. The photographs from the series Room 901, documenting the actions taken during these two years, are the only traces of this unique odyssey.
Biographical note
Irene F. Whittome, artiste conceptuelle et féministe, exerce son art depuis plus de quarante ans. Née à Vancouver en 1942, elle s’est installée à Montréal en 1968 après un séjour de cinq ans en Europe. Parallèlement à ses activités de création, elle a mené une carrière de professeure en arts visuels à l’Université Concordia. Elle a remporté les prix les plus prestigieux décernés aux artistes canadiens, notamment le prix Paul-Émile-Borduas en 1977 et le prix Gershon-Iskowitz en 1992, et elle est officière de l’Ordre du Canada depuis 2005. Elle a exposé en solo dans plusieurs grands musées canadiens, en particulier au Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal (1980), au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (1997), au Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (2000) et au Musée des beaux-arts de l’Ontario (AGO, 1990).
