I’ve had the privilege of contributing to the Vendu–Sold auction several times in recent years, whether as a member of the selection committee or through acquisitions as curator of the Desjardins Collection. Each of these experiences proved to be rich in discoveries, testifying to the vitality of our art scene in terms of both artists and stakeholders. The relationship of trust between Esse and its environment confirms both its essential position within our cultural ecosystem and its role in spreading the word about Canadian art.
For me as a curator, the auction represents a valuable opportunity to acquire works while supporting a leading organization. The selections on offer reflect the heritage that we have been building for almost fifty years. Last year, our attention to singular and engaged voices resulted in the acquisition of a work by Ari Bayuaji, whose practice is rooted in social and environmental issues, and one by Alexis Gros-Louis, who explores Wendat realities and imaginaries.
These acquisitions do more than simply enrich our collection; they also actively support artists and organizations that are the backbone of our field, and they encourage the presentation of pieces in exhibitions that the public can attend. By integrating them into a work environment, we help to broaden the audiences for contemporary art and nurture sensitive and durable encounters with the works.
Today, the Desjardins Collection includes almost three thousand works produced by more than nine hundred Québec and Canadian artists. It speaks to the excellence of contemporary production through the diversity of themes, techniques, and styles that it encompasses and through its lasting commitment to local artists.
The works are seen by employees, members, and clients on a daily basis, as they enhance work areas and common spaces throughout Québec and Canada. This vision resonates with the values promoted by Esse, which favours the reach of both Canadian and international artists.
