For over thirty years I have made collages as points of departure for my paintings. In recent years, these studies have evolved into small dioramas, such as Study for Blue Wave. These shadow boxes are related to cabinets of curiosity and also to the theatre,in which the poetic drama of staged imagery can play out. The title is an obvious reference to the water at the lower left but also to flapping butterfly wings, the gesticulation of the flying ghost, and, more generally, the sweep and scanning of the spectator’s eye as it visits and revisits the various components of the collage.
