“For de Broin, an artist not averse to wit, nods, or quips, art always maintains its joyful and spirited character that appreciates science as a gay art. In Untitled II, he mischievously criticizes the myths around design and functionalism, particularly those related to the famous chrome K700 stool created by designers Phillip Salmon, Hugh Hamilton, and Rein Sossalou in 1969, which de Broin transforms into a cumbersome afunctional structure.” – Laetitia Chauvin
Biographical note
Michel de Broin approfondit sa pratique transdisciplinaire en développant un vocabulaire visuel en constante expansion. Pièce par pièce, les objets qu’il met en jeu déjouent les fonctions et usages que l’on tient pour acquis, laissant ainsi entrevoir des mondes de possibilités concrètes.
Il a reçu le prix Sobey en 2007. Ses œuvres font partie de plusieurs collections privées et publiques, en France, en Allemagne, en Corée, aux États-Unis et au Canada. Il a réalisé nombre d’expositions solos, dont Reciprocal Energy, au Musée d’art contemporain du Val-de-Marne (France) ; Reverse Entropy, au Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin) ; Disruption from Within, au Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art (Winnipeg); Épater la Galerie, à la Villa Merkel (Esslingen, Allemagne). Collectivement, il a participé à Car Fetish. I drive, therefore I am, au musée Tinguely (Bâle, Suisse); à Acclimatation, au Centre d’art Villa Arson (Nice, France) ; à Untethered, à Eyebeam (New York) ; et à Au courant, au musée Hessel (Annandale-on-Hudson, NY).
Un survol de mi-parcours de sa carrière a été présenté par le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal en 2013.
