The publishing of any book establishes a landscape as each copy seeds itself in the world. Each book finds a new home, a new reader, gets lined up on a shelf. Every bookshelf can also be read as a portrait, of sorts, of the person who assembled it: an individual imagined through the residue of his or her reading; an individual imagined in the gaps between.
The silkscreen series After the life for the most part (2014) is made of books taken from Derek Sullivan’s bookshelf – books on different subjects that happened to reside in the same place. These have been scanned, layered, arranged, enlarged, obscured, and flattened into new forms. The series was published by Polígrafa Obra Gráfica, Barcelona.
Biographical note
Derek Sullivan, né en 1976 à Richmond Hill, en Ontario, a obtenu un baccalauréat en beaux-arts de l’Université York de Toronto et une maitrise en beaux-arts de l’Université de Guelph. Des expositions individuelles ont été consacrées à son travail : The Booklover, à la Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina), Albatross Omnibus, à The Power Plant (Toronto), The Missing Novella, à Oakville Galleries (Oakville), Bulletin Board à White Columns (New York) et More Young Americans à Kiosk (Gand, Belgique). L’artiste a participé aussi à de nombreuses expositions collectives, notamment à la BNL MTL 2012, à Montréal, au City Art Centre d’Édimbourg (Where do I end and you begin) et à la Kunsthalle de Vienne (Blue times). Ses livres et ses œuvres ont été publiés par Paul + Wendy Projects (Toronto), Art Metropole (Toronto), Boabooks (Genève) et Printed Matter Inc. (New York).
Sullivan a été retenu cinq fois comme candidat pour le prestigieux prix Sobey pour les arts; en 2012, il était sélectionné parmi les finalistes. Les œuvres de Sullivan présentes dans la collection du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada ont figuré dans l’exposition de groupe Nos chefs-d’œuvre, nos histoires présentée par le Musée à l'automne 2017.
