Lift Up and Up and Up is part of the 2017 series Brick Wave Suede and Lilacs Too, in which Mehler explores ideas surrounding emotional imagination, the face as an event, and post-portraiture. Lift Up was titled after listening to and thinking about Vince Staples’s Lift Me Up on repeat in the studio.
Biographical note
Maegan Rose Mehler is a Toronto-based artist. Her practice is informed by her interest in the complexities of relationships and the politics of the face. Her work is presented as a constellation of staged encounters exploring affect as an event. Recently, she has been questioning what emotional imagination might mean and the capacity of the face when the eyes-nose-mouth blur together or fall away completely. Mehler received her MFA from the University of Guelph and her BFA from the University of Victoria. Recent projects include the solo exhibitions Brick Wave Suede and Lilacs Too at Richard Rhodes Dupont Projects, Tyler Blue for an Ex Moon at Mi-Yu Gallery, and Falling Face Sunshine Chaser at G Gallery (all in Toronto). She is the recipient of a 2017 Emerging Artist Grant from the Ontario Arts Council and a 2014–2015 SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Master’s Scholarship.
