Two Riders

Oil pastel, 2020

50.8 x 40.64 cm
Estimate
$1 800
Two Riders is an archival wax-crayon base layered with oil pastels. The pastel surface is carved away to reveal the often-unpredictable hues that dictate the image. The scene is set on a diamond pattern that is indicative of both medieval tapestries and board games. The two soldiers on horseback are retreating from something unknown. One of them looks forward, while the other looks back, holding a small white cloth. A hand is missing. Supernatural phantoms and companion dogs accompany them on their journey. Here, one is invited to consider the motivations of the figures joined in salvation and desperation.
