Cette œuvre appartient à une série de diptyques peints, natures mortes ou vignettes issues de l’observation, en cours depuis 2010. Des tableaux réalisés alla prima, de même taille et dans les mêmes teintes, illustrant des objets ordinaires, et des fragments d’atelier sont accrochés par paire selon leur sujet commun. Par cette répétition en deux temps, l’artiste interroge la variation et la représentation de ce qui est observé. Bien que le sujet soit peint deux fois, il n’y a pas de tentative de reproduction. Le déplacement ou la variation de perspective correspond plutôt au rejet d’une version qui ferait autorité, à la prédominance du multiple sur un original définitif.
Notice biographique
Mark Igloliorte was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, and grew up in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador. His primary media are painting and drawing. Recently, Igloliorte has participated in national and international exhibitions such as Beat Nation, Vancouver Art Gallery; Le Nouveau Pleinairisme, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec; drift (solo show), curator Ryan Rice, Toronto Free Gallery; and The Québec Triennial 2011 The Work Ahead of Us, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. He has received a number of awards and grants, including the Lillian Vineberg Award in Painting and Drawing, the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Visual Arts Grant, and a Canada Council for the Arts Emerging Artist Grant.
As an Inuk, Igloliorte draws on his Labradorian background and the communities of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Hopedale for his work. He has been recognized as a Labrador Inuit Role Model by the Nunatsiavut government. In 2008 and 2009, he worked with several groups of Inuit youths, leading painting and drawing workshops funded in part by the National Aboriginal Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy.
He holds a master’s degree in fine art, studio art—painting and drawing from Concordia University.
