This work belongs to a series of diptychs of observational still lifes and vignette paintings that has been ongoing since 2010. Alla prima paintings of similar sizes and palettes depicting commonplace objects and fragments of studio space are hung in pairs that portray the same subject matter. Through this dual repetition, the artist considers observational variance and representation. Although the subject matter is painted twice over, there is no effort to replicate. Instead, the shift or fluctuation in perspective rejects an authoritative version, placing greater emphasis on multitudes over a definitive original.
Biographical note
Mark Igloliorte was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, and grew up in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador. His primary media are painting and drawing. Recently, Igloliorte has participated in national and international exhibitions such as Beat Nation, Vancouver Art Gallery; Le Nouveau Pleinairisme, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec; drift (solo show), curator Ryan Rice, Toronto Free Gallery; and The Québec Triennial 2011 The Work Ahead of Us, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. He has received a number of awards and grants, including the Lillian Vineberg Award in Painting and Drawing, the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Visual Arts Grant, and a Canada Council for the Arts Emerging Artist Grant.
As an Inuk, Igloliorte draws on his Labradorian background and the communities of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Hopedale for his work. He has been recognized as a Labrador Inuit Role Model by the Nunatsiavut government. In 2008 and 2009, he worked with several groups of Inuit youths, leading painting and drawing workshops funded in part by the National Aboriginal Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy.
He holds a master’s degree in fine art, studio art—painting and drawing from Concordia University.
