Self-actualization is defined as the process illustrating the desire to become who one is, to become everything one is capable of being. Some posit that this is one of the noblest human needs. This work symbolizes the moment when the artist took on the intention to make his studio a space of self-actualization.
Biographical note
Clovis-Alexandre Desvarieux was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 1986. He left Haiti in 2004 and moved to Montréal, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in construction engineering at Concordia University. He is still living in Montréal. He draws his inspiration from the need to assimilate the cultural heritages that he is able to acknowledge and to disclose through his work the most beautiful parts of the light contained within them.
In painting, he has developed a language at the border of abstraction and figuration, with which he addresses identity-related questions through a syncretic exploration of Haitian mythology, Haitian history, and how they intertwine with contemporary global, social, and environmental issues.
