L’œuvre When the Bad Thing Happens est issue d’un processus de peinture improvisé. J’ai commencé par modeler la forme naturelle du support en bois, qui me fait penser au produit d’une vision un peu désaxée, mal réglée. J’ai laissé cette forme évoquer simplement l’idée du mouvement, en accumulant des coups de pinceau qui sont plus tard devenus des objets, eux-mêmes suggérés par l’observation de la peinture et du travail du pinceau. L’imagerie a fini par prendre la forme d’une grande tempête, ce qui pourrait bien être une réaction inconsciente à l’inquiétude que j’éprouvais alors pour l’un de mes amis, qui vivait à Porto Rico avec sa famille pendant l’ouragan dévastateur de l’automne 2017.
Notice biographique
Adam Gunn hails originally from Nova Scotia and currently lives in Montreal. He received a BFA from NSCAD University in Halifax and an MFA from Concordia University in Montreal. He was a finalist in the 13th and 15th RBC Canadian Painting Competitions, the 2010 Nova Scotian winner in the BMO 1st Art! competition, and is this year’s recipient of the Nancy Petry Award. His solo show Anything, Anytime, Anyplace, For No Reason at All was held at Art Mûr in January 2018. His paintings are in many private collections. He currently works with improvised shaped paintings that represent and imbed processes of change, growth, mutation, and creation.
