Rade (OL) was specifically conceived for the Vendu–Sold event and is a natural follow-up to the ‘Réservoirs’ series presented last spring at Galerie René Blouin. It’s a fleeting work, a composition that shifts with the changing light, whose shimmering draws us back and forth between the support and the material, and the sinuous strip that runs in every direction, beyond the limits of the frame.
Biographical note
Born in 1974 in Montréal, Daniel Langevin lives and works in Montréal. He teaches visual art at the Montmorency College in Laval. In 1999 he earned a BRA from the Université du Québec à Montréal. In Langevin’s work, painting is the preferred medium to constantly reinvent one’s notion of balance, a precarious, artificially composed equilibrium of forms and colours, restraint and risk. The painting is a closed-in space in which an internal tension freezes elements into place, a space where a line imposes its rules, where a stock of stripped metal can alter the perception of a colour, where empty and full merge. This quest for balance often takes on the form of a search in which one fumbles about, in which each decision sketches out a bit of the next step, without necessarily being the right one. This visual game of repulsion and seduction pushes the artist to us very economical means, thus flirting with formalism and the minimalist spirit.
Langevin has had several exhibition with René Blouin, notably Stianes in 2007 and Pharmacie in 2009. His work has also been presented at the Galerie Clark, Galerie B-312, the Parisian Laundry and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto. His works are part of the Collection prêt d’œuvres d’art of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the RBC collection and several private collections in Canada and the US.
