Tears

Tears belongs to a trilogy created in the spring of 2011. Using a collage technique developed by the artist in 2008, this trilogy presents armchairs, a divan, and a bed all pierced with gaping black holes. The furniture motif, used here for the first time, reflects the artist’s preoccupation with the body and its many, often fragmented or isolated representations, explored in gestural and more figurative drawings by the artist in recent years. Tears shows two armchairs, two individuals: an old couple, worn and damaged.
Biographical note
Sophie Jodoin, who lives and works in Montreal, favours the media of drawing, painting, and video. Since 2004, she has worked exclusively in black and white. Her often difficult subjects evolve into austere, minimalist, frequently indivisible large-scale mural installations. In 2008, she began creating video pieces that echo her works on paper. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe, and Canada, most recently at Battat Contemporary, Centre Clark, and OBORO, Montreal; Mount Saint Vincent University Art Gallery, Halifax; and Galerie Bertrand Grimont, Paris. In the fall of 2011, she will exhibit at the Musée d’art de Joliette and the Museum London in Ontario. Her works are featured in the collections of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Université de Montréal, among others.
