This photograph was taken at an old foundry (built in 1851) in Ansonia, USA, while I was shooting a commercial (I didn’t realize that this was unacceptable practice at the time!). More important than the ad I was filming was the strange beauty of the crucibles and cast iron moulds, objects that seemed devoid of meaning – except that they resembled ready-mades. It wasn’t the first or last time, however, that I would take photographs in parallel to my work as director of photography, as my personal photography took nothing away from the films I was shooting. I did the same later when working with Lamothe, Groulx, Carle – and even Godard on occasion, shooting other images, inspired by the paintings of the Automatistes, peers of Borduas whom I rubbed shoulders with in Montreal in the 1950s. These unique photographs were created over many years and are completely unrelated to my film, documentary, and advertising projects.
Biographical note
Guy Borremans est photographe, cinéaste, caméraman, directeur de la photo et réalisateur. Depuis ses premières expositions particulières, en 1956 à Granby et à la galerie d’art non figuratif L’Actuelle l’année suivante, il a pris part à plus d’une cinquantaine d’expositions de photographies au Québec et sur la scène internationale. Depuis les années 1980, il continue sa carrière de portraitiste et de photographe dans les domaines du théâtre et de la danse. Son œuvre, qui couvre plus de soixante années d’une vie artistique féconde et sans compromis, revendique pour la photographie un statut particulier. Il a exposé récemment au centre culturel Pauline-Julien à Trois-Rivières (2010), à la Maison Hamel-Bruneau de Sainte-Foy (2011) et chez Michel Guimont. Ses œuvres font partie de plusieurs collections privées et publiques, dont celle du MNBAQ, qui se distingue par une récente et importante acquisition de quinze photos.
