V is part of a series of oval paintings of acrylic paint adhered to patterned fabric. Paint is applied on a plastic surface, lifted after drying, and adhered to the surface. The paint literally sits on the surface of the painting, creating a pronounced foreground–background relationship.
Biographical note
Sarah Cale is a visual artist living in Toronto, whose current work investigates an intersection of painting and collage. She received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and an MFA from the University of Guelph. In 2009 and 2010 she was shortlisted for the RBC painting award, and she has received numerous grants and residencies. Her work has been twice shown in solo exhibitions at Jessica Bradley Gallery (Toronto) and the Art Gallery of Southern Alberta (Lethbridge) and has been included in recent group exhibitions at the Musee d’art contemporain de Montreal, The Power Plant (Toronto), Equinox Gallery (Vancouver), Oakville Galleries, Galerie de l’UQAM (Montreal), and Beaverbrook Art Gallery (Fredericton). Her work is in private and public collections, including the Royal Bank of Canada and TD Canada Trust.
