Banana Flower #1 was made in 2005 as part of an exploration of my surroundings and personal status. It was an exercise in recognizing the action and treatment applied to quotidian objects to reflect on personal presence, its cultural implications, and the construction of syntax. The process of producing this work helped me to understand the use of still life as a form of examining identity and reviewing my visual language. The work was first presented at Dazibao, Montréal, in 2005, in the solo exhibition The Centre of the Forest Is a Lake Like Mirror.
Biographical note
Chih-Chien Wang was born in Taiwan. Since 2002, he has lived in Montreal. He earned an MFA at Concordia University following studies at the Chinese Culture University, Taiwan. He has had recent solo exhibitions at Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain (2017), Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2016), the Art Gallery of Mississauga (2015), the Darling Foundry, Montreal (2015), Expression, Saint-Hyacinthe (2014), the Musée régional de Rimouski (2013), and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (2012).
Wang received the Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography in 2017. His works are in the collections of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the National Gallery of Canada, Hydro-Québec, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, TD Bank Group, Caisse Desjardins, Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Musée de l’Elysée (Lausanne), Collection Prêts d'œuvres d’art du MNBAQ, BMO Financial Group, Ville de Montréal, and the Canada Council Art Bank.
In his photographs and videos, Wang explores moments of everyday life. Through image accumulation, he examines his relationship with the world through details of his surroundings. His works reflect his understanding of people, society, and the city where he lives.
