Gemini fungi and the tree ants

Gouache sur papier, 2021

22.86 x 30.48 cm

I don’t know the story behind Gemini fungi and the tree. I guess it is a tale only for cheeky monkeys who never want to sleep at night.

Its pastel landscape first caught my eye. I then noticed this thin red frame, struggling to hold the whole tale inside. It reminds me of the red string you tie on your finger to remember something important. The title dawned on me and followed me to my bed ...

Gemini fungi. It is the double, the multiplication, the proliferation. A recurring theme in the artist's mythology that sometimes reminds me of the shenanigans in the Parent Trap, or the doppelgänger coming to announce the imminent death of its double. And the tree ants. Could have been the title of a band or of a fairy tale. I like to imagine both; ants which, like the grasshopper, have been singing all summer long. Little shadow workers who entertain the grown-ups.

Gemini fungi and the tree ants. This title chased me and I didn’t sleep.
