This work is one of the Cuban images in the Intérieurs series, probably the most significant of Chagaoutdinova’s work to date: “Chagaoutdinova has remained attentive to the evolution of the society in which she experienced the initial effects of perestroika. She returned to Russia to create a series of photographs juxtaposing traditional Soviet artefacts with miscellaneous objects born of Western consumer culture. Chagaoutdinova sought similar traces in Cuba, another developing communist society that has nevertheless been marked by consumer dreams. Her recently distanced perspective has produced sensitive, fresh, and revealing images.”

Biographical note
Born in White Russia, Olga Chagaoutdinova has lived in Canada for over ten years. After studying at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, she obtained a Master’s in Photography at Concordia University. Her practice, rich with her own cultural heritage and socio-political referents, offers an astute commentary on intimacy and daily life in Russia, Cuba, and Canada. Her work has been exhibited widely in her native Russia, the United States, China, Holland, and Cuba. In Canada, she has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (Toronto), Galerie Trois Points (Montreal), and the Patrick Mikhail Gallery (Ottawa). Her works can be found in the following collections: Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec’s Prêt d’œuvres d’art, Far East Museum of Fine Art of Khabarovsk (Russia), Hydro-Québec, and Centro Hispano Americano de La Havane (Cuba).
