Chair of the Board of Directors of Esse
Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University
On behalf of the board of directors of Esse, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the sixteenth edition of our annual fundraising auction, Vendu-Sold. This wonderful event celebrates not only the immense talent of established and emerging Canadian artists but also the dynamic community of collectors, authors, and visionaries who understand the essential role that magazines play in the cultural landscape.
Art magazines are more than just publications: they are essential platforms for dialogue, discovery and reflection. They document emerging movements, give a voice to underrepresented perspectives, and deepen our understanding of contemporary practices. Cultural periodicals such as Esse offer a space for thoughtful engagement, disciplined criticism, and lasting research.
Revenues from the Vendu-Sold auction will directly support our actions, providing funding for writing; printing a high-quality magazine; broadening access to our publications via a digital platform; public programs offering outreach for today’s art, such as roundtables and digital residencies; and mentorships for young authors. Thanks to the generosity of artists and gallery owners who have made their contribution by presenting the works for auction, and thanks to you, we will be able to continue nourishing the intellectual and creative ecosystems that enrich the art world. In addition, part of the profits will be given to the participating artists.
Marble, ceramics, assemblages, paintings, drawings, photographs, and textiles: this year’s selection, made by our experienced jury, is particularly rich and diverse. It offers works by internationally known artists, mid-career artists, and artists who are worth discovering. A word to the wise: whatever the profile of your collection, you’re likely to be tempted!
In this auction, each bid is an investment: in the artists, in the magazine, and in the future of discourse on art. So, we are deeply grateful for your participation and your enthusiasm. Together, let’s make sure that critical thought and artistic excellence continue to have a place in society.
