Raymonde April has been known since the late 1970s for her minimalist practice inspired by the everyday, at the confluence of documentary, autobiography, and fiction. Autoportrait au sac was her first publicly presented self-portrait. It was reproduced on the invitation to her first solo exhibition, at Powerhouse Gallery in Montreal in 1977, and at the inaugural exhibition of the first Chambre blanche, in Quebec City, in 1978. The self-portrait drew the attention of the editors at Le Nouvel Observateur and was produced in the prestigious Spécial Photo. La photo dans la photo in 1978.
Biographical note
Raymonde April has been presenting her work in solo and group exhibitions in Québec and abroad for more than thirty years. Among her recent solo shows: the double exhibition Near You No Cold, at Galerie Donald Browne and Centre Clark (Montreal, 2015), and Raymonde April: La maison où j’ai grandi at the Musée du Bas-Saint-Laurent (Rivière-du-Loup, 2013). She has also designed and produced group exhibitions with members of Outre-vie/Afterlife, a project she launched in 2013. She is the author of artist books, including Réservoirs Soupirs (VU, 1993), L’eau renversée (Dazibao, 2002), and Soleils couchants (J’ai VU, 2004), and her work has been the subject of books and exhibition catalogues. April has also directed films, including Tout embrasser, presented at the Festival du nouveau cinéma et des nouveaux médias (2000). Her works are in the most important Canadian public collections and numerous private collections. She is currently preparing Traversée, a major solo exhibition that will open in October 2022 at 1700 La Poste, in Montréal.
