Accretion was painted just shortly after Beth Stuart stopped working from photographic sources. Characteristically, the forms in the painting vacillate between being recognizable and unrecognizable. The central green tube is simultaneously like a cross section of some organic interior, and a land formation. As in all of her paintings, there is a deliberate awkwardness between the relationship of the image and the edge of the painting, as if the painting were very aware of its own painting-ness.
Biographical note
Beth Stuart is a painter, based in Toronto. Since graduating with an MFA from the University of Guelph in 2009, she has had two solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including The Phoenix Art: The Renewed Life of Contemporary Painting curated by Robert Enright at Galerie Simon Blais in Montreal. In the summer of 2009 she attended the residency Why are Conceptual Artists Painting Again? Because They Think it’s a Good Idea at the Banff Centre with renowned international critic Jan Verwoert. She was recently a finalist in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition and she looks forward to a solo exhibition at Battat Contemporary in March 2011. Her work is currently available through Board of Directors Gallery in Toronto.
