This work belongs to a series of six images originally exhibited at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. The photographs in this series were created from drawings altered by specific lighting conditions: the transparent effect was created by light traversing the paper from behind, while the brilliance of the colour yellow was heightened by the effect of frontal lighting falling on other parts of the image. This work plays on the difference between a seen drawing and a photographed drawing: the photograph fuses together the drawing, the lighting device, and the space behind and in front of the paper.
Biographical note
Alexandre David vit et travaille à Montréal. Sa pratique, qui concerne surtout la sculpture, tend souvent vers l’architecture, à partir de notions liées à l’usage de l’espace. Si parfois il vise à générer un lieu à partir de l’expérience d’un objet, il travaille le plus souvent dans la perspective d’installations qui s’inscrivent dans des lieux architecturaux déjà déterminés. Ses œuvres ont été exposées dans des divers musées, galeries et centres d’artistes au Canada, au Royaume-Uni, aux Pays-Bas, en Autriche, en Suisse et en France. En 2011, il a exposé en solo à YYZ à Toronto, à l’Espace Tilt à Lausanne, au centre Plein Sud à Longueuil et à la Parisian Laundry à Montréal. Il a participé également à la dernière triennale du MAC de Montréal. Ses œuvres font partie des collections du MNBAQ, ainsi que de plusieurs collections privées au Canada, en Europe et aux États-Unis. Il est représenté par la galerie Parisian Laundry de Montréal.
