By means of a rather comic and improbable rapport between a rainbow trout and a 60 cm metal ruler, this work highlights the measure by which the choice of format for an image, far from being a trivial consideration, always influences our reading and socio-physical perception of a particular representation. Although the work primarily focuses on the frequent use of large format in contemporary photography, it also underlines a certain tendency to exaggerate when it comes to oral story telling (fishing stories...!): narratives that often contradict the scientific or objective aspect of the photographic document.
Biographical note
Mathieu Latulippe vit et travaille à Montréal. Dans sa pratique artistique, il expérimente, avec humour, divers moyens de relier, de combiner ou d’opposer certains éléments de façon à démontrer la complexité d’une même réalité à travers plusieurs facettes ou couches d’interprétations différentes. On a pu voir son travail au Canada et à l’étranger, notamment au Festival international du film sur l’art (2005 à 2008), à la Manifestation internationale d’art de Québec 4 (2008), au centre Clark (2009), à Netwerk et à l’Établissement d’en face (Belgique, 2010), à la Fonderie Darling (2010), et lors de la triennale 2011 du MAC de Montréal. Il a été artiste en résidence au centre Daïmon de Gatineau (2008) et à Bolu, en Turquie (2010; résidence offerte par Among other things). Ses œuvres figurent, entre autres, dans la collection Majudia et dans celle d’Alain Tremblay.
