For more than seven years Matthew Feyld has investigated the possibilities of a single motif, the dot. Recently the painter turned within his signature form as a way to push his work forward, first enlarging the dot to become a circle. To make circle paintings is, in one sense, to explore a common misreading of the dot paintings. This is because the dot, while inherently a circular form, was chosen by Feyld less because it is a type of circle, but more so as a neutral shape to serve as the matrix for his exploration of positive and negative space, presence and absence, and other dualities, with their full range of philosophical, aesthetic, and art historical resonances.

Biographical note

In his paintings, Matthew Feyld explores the relationships among surface, light, material, and colour. The intimate scale and tactile quality of the work encourage the viewer to examine the subtle structural characteristics of the paintings. The dense, evidently worked paint surfaces and visible brushwork reveal Feyld’s interest in the act and process of painting.

Feyld’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and has been included in solo and group exhibitions at venues such as Berggruen Gallery (San Francisco), Geukens & De Vil (Antwerp), the Mikhail Bulgakov Museum (Kiev), Galerie Lange + Pult (Zurich), 57W57ARTS (New York), Alexander Berggruen (New York), Pazo Fine Arts (Washington, DC), KOKI ARTS (Tokyo), Sunday-S Gallery (Copenhagen), Birch Contemporary (Toronto), L21 Gallery (Palma de Mallorca), and Blouin Division (Montréal).
