The painting Duty was executed while Moran was working on the exhibition The Boss, The Queen, The Secretary and The Henchman. The title refers to specific roles assigned to each individual in a young girl’s ensemble. Fascinating to Moran is these children’s ability, at such a young age, to self-assemble, recognize dominance and submission, and then exercise this duality with fervour and intention. In this light, the painting Duty depicts two figures on the right using a shower nozzle to perform the task of cleaning a third figure’s hair. The three figures have self-organized into hierarchical stances, taking on the roles of leader, follower, and taskmaster.
Biographical note
Kristine Moran lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She received her MFA from Hunter College in New York after earning her BFA at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. Moran has had solo shows at Nicelle Beauchene (New York) and Daniel Faria Gallery (Toronto). Her work has been exhibited in numerous group shows, including Rogue Element at RH+ (Istanbul), Power of Selections at Western Exhibitions (Chicago), How High? at Left Field Gallery (San Luis Obispo, California), Scale a Wall at Cuevas Tilleard (New York), and The Big Gift: Calgary Celebrates Art from Canadians at the Glenbow Museum (Calgary). Her work was featured in Phaidon’s Vitamin P2 and has been acquired by several international public collections, including the Saatchi Collection (London, UK).
