The figurative aspect of my pictorial work as explored in my recent series of ‘Apparitions’ presents draped forms, clothes without bodies, enveloped voids. The painting’s oval form refers directly to the absence of a face in these draped figures and becomes part of the composition as its symbolic replacement.
Biographical note
Marie-Claude Bouthillier lives and works in Montreal. She holds an MFA from the Université de Québec à Montreal. Throughout her career, the exploration of conceptual spaces between text and textile—the complex interplay between words and shapes—has been a constant in her research into painting. This exploration has been the basis for a number of exhibitions, such as her solo show Créatures (La Chambre Blanche, Quebec City, 2004) and Réponse à Zola (Centre d’art et de diffusion Clark, Montreal, 2006), which she curated. Bouthillier exhibited her work in Artefact 2007 (Montreal), Off Artefact (Joyce Yahouda Gallery, 2007), and the Symposium international d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul (2007). With Apparitions, a solo exhibition at Clark (Montreal) in 2008, she pursued her investigation into the textile nature of painting’s medium through representations of folds, veils, nets and grids. In 2009 she was part of the exhibition L’écrire en peinture at Galerie Orange as well as Occurrences at Galerie Occurrence (Montreal).
Her work has been included in group exhibitions in Quebec’s major museums, including the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. The work of Marie-Claude Bouthillier is regularly exhibited abroad, in both solo and group exhibitions.
