I’m an engineer by training, and I’ve never claimed to be an artist. My Cartesian mind and linear thinking usually guide my approach to life. And that’s why I am so profoundly amazed by the creative paths that artists take and their capacity to give birth to such living, vibrant things starting from a simple idea. To see what they imagine emerge, take shape surprisingly and gracefully, and transport us into powerful emotions is a privilege that never fails to touch me.

I believe that we all need such exhilaration. When it is true and sincere, art shakes up our daily life, snatches us away from routine, and draws us to what is essential: to feel, to think, to resonate.

You don’t have to be a collector to feel this pull. It’s enough to be curious, open, available. An artwork can trigger an inner dialogue, an unexpected emotion, a burst of engagement. It’s from this perspective that I see the Vendu–Sold auction: as a welcoming space for artists, their works, and the public to meet. It also offers a wonderful opportunity to weave ties among the business, cultural, and civic communities—to start fertile, lasting exchanges.

Esse plays a valuable role in this ecosystem. With its critical gaze, ethical and social engagement, and excellent publications, the magazine actively contributes to spreading the word about contemporary art, both local and international. As artist Marc Séguin says, so rightly, “Art doesn’t have to explain everything, but it can suggest everything.”

And indeed, it is in this space overflowing with suggestions that emotions arise, ideas take root, and human connections come to life.
