Véronique Gaumond-Carignan
There are works that strike us like lightning and others that reveal themselves gradually, little by little. Sometimes, it’s a detail that captures our attention, that arouses our curiosity as to its history, its raison d’être. We feel instantly drawn to it, by a distinctive feature or perhaps by a message of personal significance. Excitement is followed by exploration. Then it’s too late: We fall irrevocably under its spell. We absolutely must have it. And what of the surge of adrenaline once we’ve bought the piece, or the affection we feel for “our” work every time we set eyes on it? And what about the pride we feel when it sparks discussions or debate, when it expresses something beyond words, or when a child gazes at it with fresh eyes? We also feel proud to have contributed to keeping contemporary art alive. An art that is sometimes surprising, sometimes moving, shocking, or amusing, and that, no matter what, never leaves us indifferent. An art that enrichens our culture, an art that brings people together; an inclusive art that casts a different light on the world and contributes to our evolution.
All this expresses what contemporary art is to me. Whether you are a seasoned collector or a neophyte keen to get started, I invite you to discover and support Canadian artists through our Vendu–Sold benefit auction. By doing so, you will also be actively contributing to the continued development of Éditions esse on both the local and international scene. Who knows, perhaps you will find a work that will perfectly enhance or even mark the beginning of your collection. Either way, I promise you a truly memorable evening in celebration of art and creativity.
