Paysage échevelé 2 belongs to a series of drawings entitled Le voyage d’une fabulatrice created between 2006 and 2009. These fantastical landscapes evoke places visited by the artist (Egypt, Turkey, Japan, among others). Composed of labyrinthine lines in which volcanoes, tufted mountains, flying carpets, starry skies, carousels, staircases of snails, and castles intertwine, they express a passionate, idealized vision of a world in which desire and fantasy triumph over reality and verisimilitude. At the same time, these landscapes, populated by black hair and erupting volcanoes, also flirt with catastrophe and the sombre aspects of the psyche.
Biographical note
Catherine Bolduc is interested in how the psyche transgresses the real through fiction and fantasy. Her practice evokes the vulnerability of humankind in face of the disparity between desire and reality. Her work has been shown on numerous occasions in Quebec (Musée national des beaux‑arts du Québec, Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides, Musée régional de Rimouski, centre Expression, Galerie [sas], Joyce Yahouda Gallery, Galerie de l’UQAM, among others) and abroad (notably at Toni Tapiès, Barcelona; Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; FRISE, Hamburg; Glassbox, Paris; De Overslag, the Netherlands). Bolduc has been awarded numerous prizes and has participated in several residencies overseas (Bourse Duchamp-Villon 2001, Plein sud; Studios du Québec, Berlin and Tokyo, etc.). Her works have been acquired by several public and private collections (including the Prêt d’œuvres d’art and permanent collections of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, and the Cirque du Soleil collection).
