This piece is part of the De l’autre côté de l’abstraction series, created by the artist during a residency at Toronto’s Open Studio in 2008. Blue tones dominate, suggesting the uniformity of the sky and water. There is, however, a palpable tension between the painting’s ultra-flat surface and the depth of the iconography that traverses his pictorial work. Diverse, recognizable motifs such as stylized flames or flowers reminiscent of lace are stencilled onto the paintings. This work does not reference post-abstraction but rather translates its ambiguous position between decoration and illusion.
Biographical note
Michel Daigneault belongs to the new generation of abstract painters born “post-abstraction.” His paintings bear witness to a renewal of abstract pictorial language, playing incessantly with the idea of figuration, colour, form, spatial arrangement, which in turn prompts visitors to make their own analogies.Born in Montreal, Daigneault has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Since 2002, he has been teaching at York University, Toronto. His works are found in numerous public and museum collections, notably those of the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Musée d’art de Joliette, the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, the National Bank of Canada, Hydro‑Québec, and the Royal Bank of Canada.
