Chih-Chien Wang’s works, mainly in photography and video, frequently contain subtle traces that might refer to personal, cultural, or social concerns while dealing primarily with his everyday experience. Blue #1 is from a series of colour studies dealing with the ambiguity between observing and representing colours. Eyes, machines, surfaces, light, air, and other indeterminate elements always make colours react, and no matter how neutral their representation, subjective factors also influence the visual outcome. The multiple decisions taken in the colour representation process become “rethinks” of both the artist’s principles and the use of contemporary media. The subject of Blue #1 is ribbon collected from the artist’s son’s first birthday party.
