Balint Zsako is inspired by various movements in modern and contemporary art, from geometric abstraction to performance art. He tackles the themes of sexuality and bodily functions, as well as mythology and its manifestations. The use of physical distortion allows him to draw parallels between various psychological states. As for the mechanical appendages, they reference the conflictual nature of the relationship between the biological and the industrial. These sombre and complex open-book narratives are brought to life by vivid colours and infinite details which add supplementary meaning to the visual and conceptual reading of the work.
Biographical note
Born in Budapest in 1979, Balint Zsako lives and works in New York. In 2002, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in photography from Ryerson University (Toronto) and is currently focusing on watercolours. His narrative works are inspired by mythological, sexual, and domestic archetypes. He recently exhibited at the Loyola University Museum in Chicago (2011). His watercolours Works from the Bernardi Collection were presented in the University of Waterloo Art Gallery (Ontario) in 2010 and at MOCCA in Toronto in 2009. In Montreal, his work was shown at Papier10 and Papier11 and in exhibitions at Galerie de l’UQAM (Diabolique) and Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain (Frontières fluides) in 2009. Zsako is currently represented by Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects in Toronto, the Wilde Gallery in Berlin, the Rebecca Hossack Gallery in London, and The Proposition Gallery in New York.
