This work uses the subject of a billboard on a rooftop. My work often includes ordinary urban structures that are transformed during the act of painting. In this work, the inside view of the billboard implies an alternate “tableau” with its own suggestion of space. In a sense, this is a painting within a painting. My intent is to blur the transition between the imagined and the real, to reveal strangeness within everyday experience, and to encourage the mind’s swaying between reverie and dread.
Biographical note
Martin Golland received his BFA from Concordia University (1998) and his MFA from the University of Guelph (2006). Born in Montpellier, France, he lived in Turkey, Puerto Rico, Miami, and Toronto before moving to Ottawa. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including Imaging Disaster at Museum London (Ontario) (2013), The Archivist’s Etagère at Birch Libralato in Toronto (2012), Shapeshift at Birch Libralato in Toronto (2008), DARK TOWN at the Felix Ringel Galerie in Düsseldorf (2007), What is Said and What is Meant at the MacDonald Stewart Art Centre in Guelph (2006), and Haven at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (2004). Golland received the Honourable Mention prize at the 11th Annual RBC painting competition, the works in which were exhibited in various museums and galleries across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Power Plant Gallery in Toronto, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, and the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver. He is currently an assistant professor of painting at the University of Ottawa.
