When the Bad Thing Happens is a work that evolved out of an improvised painting process. I began by creating the organic-shaped wooden support, which I feel resembles wonky visual perception. I allowed the shape to allude to a simple sense of movement, building loose brushstrokes that were later rendered into objects suggested through observation of the paint and brushwork. The imagery in the painting took on the form of a great storm, which may have been an unconscious response to the concern for a friend of mine whose family and home were in Puerto Rico during the devastating hurricane in fall 2017.
