Sailing in a Rain Shadow Desert (sr1) is a work from a new series of paintings of the same name. Intimate in scale, this abstract piece draws us into a realm of compression and expansion, characterized by flickering light, speed, and rotation. Here the curve is used as a structuring device, a malleable marker that opens space to the possibility of latent thought as the eye is drawn into an atmosphere of shifting scopes, traces of the hand, and potential shadows of water.
Biographical note
Sarah Rooney makes paintings through a process of the layering of registers. She seeks to become witness to subtle spatial conundrums, and her works present reflections on shifts in distance, immediacy, and time. A Montreal-based artist, she was born in South Africa and spent her formative years in Brazil. She studied at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, UK, and then obtained a BFA from Concordia University and an MFA from York University, Canada.
Rooney’s paintings are included in the Canada Council Art Bank Collection, as well in private collections in Canada, the United States, and Europe. She has exhibited in Canada and the United States, and most recently in the exhibition Impulsion de réseau, curated by Jakub Zdebik at Galerie R3, Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, in March 2018, where she presented a new painting-photography series, There’s Something Outlandish About Bringing the Ocean Indoors.
