Ink on watercolour paper, 2018
56 x 76 cm

This work is part of a series of ink drawings based on Google Earth screenshots. This is the view if you could see through the walls looking northwest from my old studio at 5445 Ave. de Gaspé. Using a spectrum of ink washes, I have tried my best to re-create Google Earth’s version of the place I was in while making the drawing, replete with photographic distortions, crooked contour lines, and digital noise.
Biographical note
Matt Shane makes paintings, drawings, and room-sized collaborative installations that are anchored in the realm of landscape. His pictorial worlds follow a Romantic lineage, but arrive at a mercurial ground, at the border of wilderness and civilization, perception and fantasy.
Shane obtained a BFA from the University of Victoria and an MFA from Concordia University in 2013. He has received numerous grants and awards and has co-organized seventeen massive collaborative drawing installations alongside his best friend, Jim Holyoak. He has toured widely and done residencies and had exhibitions on three continents. His most recent collaborative work was shown as part of Manif d’art 9 at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. Shane’s work can be found in the collections of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Caisse Populaire Desjardins, Bank of Montreal, and many others. He teaches drawing and painting at Dawson College in Montréal.
