From the series Apartment Gardens, the work portrays practices of care and personalization by the residents of large apartment complexes in South Korea. Using patches of green space in front and in back of their buildings, the residents plant seeds and place pots of plants in common areas surrounding their buildings. The series documents those spaces of personal expression and the contributions to communal life.
Biographical note
Jinyoung Kim is a visual artist who explores a sense of place and material culture as core conditions for coalescence of personal and collective memories, expanding on an imaginary of the past and the present. She uses photography, video, and object-based installations to weave together an inventory of lived experiences that build on the positionality of an Asian diaspora. Her works have been exhibited and screened across Canada and internationally. She is the 2019 recipient of the Prix Lynne Cohen from the Estate of Lynne Cohen and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and was shortlisted for the Prix Pierre-Ayot in 2018. Her projects have been supported by Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts des lettres du Québec. Her works are in the collections of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Hydro-Québec, Desjardin, and the Ville de Montréal.
