Each pair of paintings from the Observational Diptychs series uses the same palette, and in each there are subtle shifts in cropping, questioning, and playing with the problem of creating depictions from observation. The frailty of the phonebook page is an entry point for experimentation in observation. In this series, the subject matter is the artist’s studio, referring to the tradition of painting.
Biographical note
Mark Igloliorte was born in Corner Brook Newfoundland in 1977, and grew up in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador. He obtained his master’s degree in painting at Concordia University in the fall of 2010. He has won many academic awards and been included in numerous group and solo shows. His paintings were recently featured in Material Traces: Time and Gesture in Contemporary Art (Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Montreal; curator: Amelia Jones), Beat Nation (Vancouver Art Gallery), Le Nouveau Pleinairisme (Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec), The Québec Triennial 2011 (Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal), Two Ways of Seeing (Galerie Donald Browne, Montreal, 2011), Ignition (Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery), and Alternation (Harbourfront Centre, Toronto, 2009). Igloliorte’s painting practice is based on observation. By working in diptychs and through repetition, shift in scale, and de-emphasis of subject matter, he creates opportunities to share his investigation of observation through painting.
