Part of the drawing series Rêves sous la peau, Cascade explores the human figure and its defining perimeter by transforming its surface into an abstract representation that both reveals and camouflages its boundaries, using elements of literalism and metaphor to explore the significance of the skin as a semi-permeable barrier that separates the self from the exterior world. The use of colour, pattern, and texture across the skin suggests the notion that the inner self is revealed by that which contains it, that it somehow imprints itself on the skin for all to see.
Biographical note
Michelle Furlong lives and works in Montreal. In 2006 she received a BFA in Studio Art from Concordia University and later pursued post baccalaureate studies in the fine arts interdisciplinary program at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University in 2007. Melding painting and drawing, Furlong’s work is inspired first and foremost by the human body, which she conceives of as both a form and a substance. Her drawings question the particular tensions that arise between the body as an agent and the body as a sign: a body describing a figure. Furlong has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the United States. In 2012 she had her first solo show, Rêves sous la peau, at Galerie d’este in Montreal. Her work is part of many private collections.
