This work belongs to a series presented at the Galerie d’art d’Outremont in 2011. The works of Erik Jerezano are conceived in a world where perceptions are often deceiving, and where the naivety of watercolour and the simplicity of paper must be taken very seriously. As Shortcut to Paradise exemplifies, Jerezano explores the creation of myths by harmoniously combining anthropomorphism, fable, and the grotesque. The indescribable delicacy of his often ironic reflections avow to the two major cultural poles that have shaped his art—Mexico and Canada.
Biographical note
Erik Jerezano est né à Mexico en 1973 et travaille à Toronto depuis 2001. Artiste autodidacte, il a présenté son travail un peu partout au Canada, notamment à la Galerie d’art d’Outremont et à la galerie Trois Points (Montréal), chez INDEXG (Toronto), à la General Hardware Contemporary (Toronto), à la Shudder Gallery (Vancouver) et lors du Symposium des arts de Baie-Saint-Paul de 2009. À l’étranger, il a également exposé au Knin Museum (Croatie) et participé à la seizième International Print Biennal de Séoul (Corée du Sud) en 2011. La même année, il gagne le premier prix du Courvoisier Collective et en 2012, il est boursier de la Fondation Pollock-Krasner. Ses œuvres font partie de plusieurs collections, dont les banques d’œuvres d’art du Conseil des arts du Canada et de la Banque de Montréal.
