This photograph, taken in Zelli’s family home in Montreal, shows a series of objects brought from Iran, including an image of a bird that belongs to Persian iconography—a symbol that is found in many of Zelli’s recent works. The title of this work, Oiseaux, invites us to look closely and find a number of birds in the photograph.
Biographical note
Leila Zelli was born in Teheran and lives in Montréal. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in visual and media arts from UQAM (2016 and 2020). She is interested in the connections that people maintain with “other” and “elsewhere” ideas—specifically those that concern the geopolitical space often designated by the debatable term “Middle East.”
Zelli’s works are in the collections of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Prêt d’œuvres d’art of the Musée national des beaux-arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul, and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. She is the 2021 recipient of the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art.
