In this abstract painting, Élise Lafontaine took inspiration from Mira Schor’s book Wet, in which she explores the connection between feminism and formalism. The work evokes skin as an ambivalent surface, both armour and membrane, in which colour, almost humid, becomes living material. In the rounded contours of this mounted painting, Lafontaine shapes an envelope in tension, oscillating between opening and retreat—at once vegetal and corporeal. The title, M.S., refers directly to Schor, underscoring the influence of her work on this exploration of skin as a space of both constraint and emancipation.
Élise Lafontaine (Tiohtiá:ke/Montréal) explore le corps comme une architecture sensible marquée par la porosité des seuils entre intérieur et extérieur. À travers une peinture abstraite et hybride, mêlant surfaces bidimensionnelles et volumes, Lafontaine interroge cette frontière mouvante, en particulier en ce qui concerne le corps féminin.
Ses recherches in situ l’ont menée dans des grottes, des lieux spirituels, des prisons et des institutions psychiatriques. Elle a participé à des résidences artistiques à la Fondation Christoph Merian (Bâles) et au Malévoz Quartier Culturel (Monthey), au Vermont Studio Center (Johnson) et au Leipzig International Art Programme. Dans le cadre d’expositions individuelles, son travail a été présenté à Jack Barrett (New York), au Centre CLARK, (Montréal), à sothu (Zürich), à Pangée (Montréal) et à la Galerie Nicolas Robert (Montréal). Finaliste du Prix de la Fondation Olivia, elle participera bientôt à l’International Studio & Curatorial Program (New York).
