Faire fiction – chez le Dc Gauvreau is part of a new body of work in which I attempt to define household light. For this photo, I took an interest in Dr. Gauvreau’s home, formerly a health clinic in Rimouski. Counterbalancing the candid lighting in this work, my body is placed in the image, not as a way of sounding out the space as in my previous work, but rather to create fiction; which compels me to think about cinematic influences on the narrative construction of my images.
Biographical note
Born in Quebec City in 1980, Yann Pocreau is an artist and art critic living and working in Montreal. His current focus is on the development of an emphatic relationship between bodies and historical places. He is also interested in the potential amalgamations between writing and photography. His photographic practice is essentially guided by the strong presence of a subject and a place, and their intimate cohabitation. Through different physical interventions he tries to develop a link with a place so as to unearth bits of its latent history and context. His photographic work is increasingly exploring the possible and impossible connections between the body’s states and a chosen place. Natural light plays an important role in this. Besides being omnipresent in the work, it is used to enliven spaces, mark some details or magnify the walls’ surface or the artist’s body, thus becoming a guide that must be followed to delineate the room, comply and adapt to it, understand it. Pocreau has participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Canada and Europe. His works are part of the permanent collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Collection prêt d’œuvres d’art of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Hydro-Québec collection.
