Masking tape on Mylar, 2007
Composed entirely of superimposed sheets of transparent Mylar paper, Repère No.19 is both support and surface. The framing involves a white background that shows through to the surface of the top piece of paper. Simple bits of masking tape complete the work. Beige masking tape and sheets of Mylar paper: these are the only materials forming the surface. Here, the material planes become planes of transparent paper placed and glued in two successive layers, one over the other, but not perfectly aligned. The masking tape is exposed and, in addition to contributing to the assemblage of the two sheets of Mylar paper, it is an integral part of the process and of the work’s composition.
Stéphane La Rue, qui vit à Montréal, se consacre à une investigation des phénomènes visuels liés à la couleur et à la lumière. Les formes, appliquées ou dessinées sur la surface avec un minimum d’interventions, apparaissent ordonnées ou savamment désarticulées et entretiennent toujours une relation étroite avec le plan pictural. L’artiste sculpte le support, retrace et dépeint ses pourtours. Plusieurs expositions individuelles lui ont été consacrées, notamment au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, à l’Art Gallery of York University (Toronto), à la Galerie de l’UQAM ainsi qu’au Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec et à la Fondation Molinari. Dans les galeries, son travail a été montré principalement aux Galeries Bellemare/Lambert (Montréal) et à la TrépanierBaer Gallery (Calgary). Il a participé à plusieurs expositions collectives, notamment à New York, à Lyon, à Istanbul et au Luxembourg. Il a également fait partie de la Triennale du MACM en 2011, ainsi que de la Biennale canadienne du MBAC en 2014. Plus récemment en 2021, son travail a été exposé dans « Combien de temps faut-il pour qu’une voix atteigne l’autre ? » au MBAM. Ses œuvres figurent dans plusieurs collections publiques, privées et d’entreprise au Canada et aux États-Unis.
